The train’s gentle rocking made me feel sleepy, despite the fact that I was standing with what felt like a building in the bag on my back. I turned slightly to reduce some of the pain in my shoulder and saw the door at the end of the car. An obviously homeless man walked through the door. He was dressed in a dirty heavy coat. He dragged a bag that looked thirty times as heavy as mine. He asked people for spare change in the polite, experienced voice of a person who had done this before. I glanced down as I did a quick check of my pockets, hoping for spare change to give him that wouldn’t leave me short for the rest

of the week. I came up empty and lifted my head just as his path crossed mine. Shrugging apologetically, I told him I had no change, expecting him to move through the door next to me and continue going to the next cars. However, he stood and stared at me, saying something quietly. Then I realized he was asking me to take him home. Suddenly money didn’t matter that much to this man who lived in poverty without even enough money to purchase socks to stave off the chill. Not food, not clothes, not even a blanket. Just affection. I felt worse than I had done about not finding any spare change. My heart sank and I couldn’t even think of the proper words to say besides “I can’t, I’m sorry.” He asked me, “What’s wrong with my request?” The answer was on my lips before I knew it. I told him that I was not good enough for him. It was after the man had left that I thought about the answer I had given him and wondered why it felt so right to say so. I realized that I should have requested love over money or food. The fact that he could appreciate something so simple and invisible is more than I could ever have expected of myself.

B The USA is a land of immigrants. Between 1815 and 1914, the world witnessed the greatest peaceful migration in its history: 35 million people, mostly Europeans, left their homelands to start new lives in America. Why did these people risk everything by leaving their homes and families? First, what forced emigrants to make the decision to leave? One major cause for European farmers to leave was the rise in population which in turn led to land hunger. Another was politics. There was an increased taxation(税收)and the growth of armies, and many young men fled eastern Europe to avoid being forced to join the army. Physical hunger provided another pressing reason. Following the collapse(衰退)of the economy of southern Italy in the 1860s, hundreds of thousands decided to start a new life in America. Religion also encouraged millions to leave the Old World. In short, people chose to leave their homes for social, economic and religious reasons. As a result, by 1890 among a total population of 63 million, there were more than nine million foreign-born Americans. But what were the attractions? First of all, there was the promise of land which was so scarce in Europe. Next, factories were calling for workers, and pay conditions were much better than back home. Men were needed to open up the West and build the long railroads, and new towns needed settlers to live in and to develop business. There was the space for religious people to practice their faith in peace. This immigration meant that by around the 1850s Americans of non-English had started to be more than those of English. As we know, there were losers. To start with, there were those unwilling immigrants, the slaves who had been used as a source of cheap labor. Nor should we forget the equally unlucky American Indians. By 1860 there were 27 million free whites, four million slaves and a mere 488,000 free blacks.

Nowadays, the USA is still seen by millions as the Promised Land. As always, it remains an attractive place to those who think it will offer them a second chance.

51. What is NOT the cause for people to leave their homeland? A. The search for religious freedom. C. Unwillingness to join the army. B. The search for adventure. D. Economy.

52. Why was the life of the European farmers in the 19th Century difficult? A. There was no land. C. The population had gone down. B. There was no peace. D. There were too many of them.

53. Which of the following was NOT an attraction of the USA? A. A healthy life. C. Freedom of religion. 54. What is the topic of this passage? A. The USA is still seen by millions as the Promised Land. B. The USA is a land of immigrants. C. Religion encouraged millions to leave the Old World. D. About one-eighth of non-native born Americans lived in the USA in 1890. 55. The American Indians __________. A. were as fortunate as the slaves C. were the most unfortunate B. were more unfortunate than the slaves D. were as unfortunate as the slaves B. Employment. D. Business opportunities.

C WASHINGTON (October 10, 2014) -- This year ’s Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded to inventors of LEDs, now being used around the world. However, according to the International Energy Agency and the World Bank, more than a billion people in the world still do not have access to electricity. After sunset, most of them use candles or oil lamps. A company in the Netherlands is trying to change that with its products based on LEDs. When darkness falls, many kids in rural parts of Haiti, Rwanda, or refugee camps in Syria read or do their homework by candlelight or a kerosene(煤油)-burning lamp. The open flames sometimes cause fires, while poisonous gases lead to respiratory problems.

Portable(便携的)electric light is safer, healthier and now, even cheaper. “This is the first time that artificial light or solar LED is now less expensive than kerosene,” said Camille van Gestel, head of a Dutch company called WakaWaka, over Skype. He added WakaWaka, which means “Shine Bright” in Swahili, is the most efficient solar-powered light and phone charger in the world today. When fully charged, it shines for up to 16 hours. It is affordable, sustainable, and its battery lasts for a long time. It can be set up on any flat surface, hung from a ceiling or set on top of a glass bottle. Van Gestel said his company operates like any other business, but some of the money made from selling its products is used to make WakaWaka lights affordable to poor people. He said the plan is supported by international non-government organizations. “The International Rescue Committee was one of the first to actually take the WakaWaka power into Syria, to provide light and power for Syrian refugees, and now the WakaWaka is the most valued non-food item in Syria,” said Van Gestel. In the past 24 months, the company has distributed around 300,000 units in places such as Syria, Hati, Rwanda, Indonesia and the Philippines. Its goal is to reach 1.2 billion people by 2030. 56. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 1 refer to? A. Using candles or oil lamps. B. Being unable to see at night. C. Having no access to LEDs. D. Having no light at night. 57. From Paragraph 2, we can learn that candles and kerosene-burning lamps __________. A. can help pupils do homework B. are still popular all over the world C. are used in Hati, Netherlands and Syria D. can occasionally lead to fires and lung troubles 58. Which of the following is true with WakaWaka? A. Its battery has a longer life than any other battery. B. It is the most affordable light for the poor. C. It is a kind of solar energy-saving light. D. It has to be charged frequently.

59. The “WakaWaka lights” plan was started to __________. A. make better WakaWaka lights for consumers B. reduce the use of electricity around the world C. help poor people without access to electricity D. support non-government organizations in the world 60. What would be the best title for the passage? A. This year ’s Nobel Prize for Physics B. Advantages of portable electric light C. Popularity of LEDs around the world D. Affordable light for people without electricity

D Many people are already planning to look for a new position when the job market picks up, but the way you quit can have a long term impact on your career. How to resign on good terms: Be prepared. Review your employee handbook or employment contract before announcing your decision, so you know what company policy is regarding resignations, severance(解聘), the return of company property and pay for unused vacation time. If you have another job lined up, be sure to have your offer in writing before you resign. Use it or lose it. If you haven’t used vacation time and will lose it if you quit, you might want to use your time before leaving or link it to your resignation date. But if you don’t want to burn any bridges, never announce your departure just after returning from vacation. Make an appointment. Be formal and make an appointment with your boss. Prepare what you want to say. Be direct and be transparent. After the discussion, put your resignation in a hardcopy letter that includes your last day and any transitional help you’ve offered. Keep a copy. Two weeks advance notice is still standard but experts recommend offering more time if you’ve worked at the company for more than five years. You also need to be prepared to leave right away -- some companies require it.

Scrub your digital footprint. Clear your browser cache(浏览器缓存), remove passwords to websites you use from work, such as your personal email or online bank account and delete any personal files on your work computer that aren’t relevant to work. Don’t delete anything work-related if you’re required to keep it. Stay close. Consider joining an employee alumni association, which often serves as a networking group for former employees. It can be a good way to keep up with changes in the company and industry and find leads to new jobs down the road. Keep in touch with coworkers you worked closely with; they may end up in management roles.

61. How many ways of resigning are mentioned in the passage? A. Three. C. Five. B. Four. D. Six.

62. You should notice the firm __________ in advance if you’ve worked there for six years. A. more than two weeks C. only two weeks B. less than two weeks D. only one moment

63. What does the underlined sentence in the passage mean? A. You want to take vacation. B. You don’t want to be fined. C. You want to leave room for necessity. D. You don’t want to continue to work here. 64. Which of the following is suggested in the passage? A. You can resign without hesitation if you don’t like your job. B. You should ignore your boss when presenting your resignation. C. You’d better keep in touch with your coworkers after resignation. D. You must delete anything in the computer you once used when you resign. 65. What’s the purpose of this passage? A. To state impacts. C. To offer warnings. B. To give suggestions. D. To list explanations.

We could see a film — making you forget your problems. M: OK. (Conversation 5) W: What do you want to do now? M: I want to be back at the hotel. W: But it’s only three o’clock. M: I’m worn out. We’ve done a lot of sightseeing. W: We still have plenty of time to do shopping. The stores won’t close until six o’clock. M: No, I want to rest for a while. We’re going to the theatre tonight, you know. W: Of course I know. The play starts at seven o’clock. When we finish shopping, it will probably be just after six. M: Then where shall we have our supper? And in that case, shall we have enough time to get to the theatre by underground? W: No, but we can take a taxi. It’s more expensive, but it’s a lot faster. M: Will our money see us through our tour if we spend money like that? W: Oh, sorry. I didn’t think of that. (Conversation 6) W: Is this your car? M: Yes. What’s the matter? W: You can’t park your car here. Don’t you see the sign “No Parking!” here? M: Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t notice it. I haven’t been here for more than three minutes. W: I’ ll have to ask you to move your car at once, otherwise you’ll get a parking ticket. M: Well, where should I park my car?

W: There’s a car park just around the corner. M: Most likely it’s full. W: Well, anyway you can’t stay here. You see, you are blocking the traffic. Can I see your driving license? M: Sure. One moment. Here you are. W: Thank you, sir. That’s all right. Now you must move your car. M: Very well, officer. I’m going.

第二节 Welcome to our free Perfect English course. I will give a short introduction to our course before we start. This course is for students who feel confident of using the basic English grammar, vocabulary and structures, but can’t express themselves fluently and effectively. In our course students will be trained to choose the best way to express themselves in social and work situations. The course, which will take 30 hours to complete, is designed to help students to develop communication skills. There are 12 units altogether and each unit is divided into four sections: Conversation, Presentation, Exercises and Communicative Activities. Each conversation gives students a speaking strategy. The presentation section usually gives students some different expressions for the same function and various ways of using them. Following each presentation are exercises that will help students to review and practise what they have just learnt. The last section is the communicative activities, which will be carried out in the form of discussions, role play, teamwork, etc.
