Modals for guessing
Time: The second period on the afternoon of Oct 28th, Tuesday Insructor: Liu Huixing Teaching Aims: At the end of the class, students will be able to: Make students tell the differences between them. Practise using modals for guessing Develop students’ ability of inference. Teaching Importance: Practise using modals for guessing Teaching difficulty: Students may use “can” to guess, with the same meaning as “may, might, could”. Teaching Aids: Multi-media, Blackboard Teaching Methods: Guided-grammar Learning Method, Explanation Teaching procedures: Step1.Lead-in Get students to think about the modals they have learnt. Step2.The presentation of modals 1.must 1). must +do 表示对现在肯定的推测 e. g. You have worked hard all day. You must be tired. 2). must +be doing 表示对此时此刻的动作进行肯定推测 表示一定正在做某事 e. g. Something must be burning. I can smell it. 3). must +have done 表示对过去发生的事情作出的肯定判断,表示过去一定做了某事 e. g. The ground is wet. It must have rained last night. 2. could/may /might 1). could/may /might + v/be +n./adj. 对现在或将来的不太肯定的推测, e. g. John is absent. He could/may/might be ill. 2).could/may/might +be doing, 表示对此时此刻的推测 e. g. Jane might be sleeping this time of day. 3). could/may/might +have done, 表示对过去的推测 e. g. I can’t find my sunglasses. I may/might /could have left them in your office. 3. can 1). can 表示推测时,只能用在否定句或疑问句中。 e. g The moon can’t always be full. 2). can have done 对过去发生行为的可能性进行推测, 表不可能(已经)做了某事 e.g He can’t have finished the work so soon. 3). can/could have done “本可以做某事,却没做”用于肯定句中,表示对过去发生的事情 做出的判断. e.g You could have had a better mark, but you are too careless. 4).表示客观的可能性,用于肯定句,表示有时候会。 e.g. It can be very hot here in summer. Step3. Do some best choice to consolidate modal verbs 1. I can’t find him anywhere. He ______in the library now.
