第三部分:阅读理解题:(30 分) A It is sometimes said that strange flying objects have been seen high up in the sky. People call these strange objects Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs). These UFOs caused a lot of interest. Some of the reports about them are difficult to believe. Some have been explained in scientific ways. Others have never been explained. Here is an account of UFOs from a report. Dennis Burdens, who wrote an article, tells us that he once saw a UFO himself. He was having dinner one night with a friend near Tripoli, Libya, and after dinner the two men walked across a yard to his room to look at some papers. Burdens noticed that the moon looked strange that night. “It wasn’t the moon,” was the reply. They watched the light and saw that it was moving. It seemed to be an object rather like a big plate. In some ways it looked like smoke with a light on it, but it wasn’t smoke because it didn’t change its shape. It was moving in a regular way. That is to say, it didn’t go suddenly faster or more slowly, and it didn’t go higher or lower. So the two men decided that there must be men in it. After that, Burdens said that he felt eyes looking at him. He was being watched in the darkness. When it was nearer, they noticed that the bottom parts were brighter than the top. The bottom was yellow and the top red. Then the object suddenly turned away and left Libya, moving very fast.

考单招——上高职单招网 www.danzhaowang.com
On a later day Burdens talked to other people about it, and he found some who had seen it. They all described it in the same way. Could they all be mistaken? 51. UFOs are_________. A. flying high up in the sky C. difficult to believe 52. A UFO was seen one night________. A. when they were walking across a yard to Burdens’ room B. while they were looking at the light C. when Burdens noticed the moon appearing strange D. while they were having dinner 53. The UFO looked like_________. A. smoke B. a large plate C. light D. a jumping object B New York's streets were covered by people dressed in elephant costumes (服装) and others waving anti-war posters with pictures of US President George W. Bush on them last week. But this was no carnival (狂欢节) -- it was the Republican Party' s National Convention (共和党全国大会) , which attracted thousands of protestors (抗 议者). It was the largest protest ever at a US political convention, with at least 120,000 people marching through Manhattan on August 29. They demanded that the US leave Iraq and a new president be chosen. The Republicans say the opposition -- Democrat Party (民主党) encouraged the people on to the streets. They believe it is a Democratic move to help win presidential election, to be held on November 2. The election is described as "the B. strange flying objects D. very interested

考单招——上高职单招网 www.danzhaowang.com
decisive battle between donkey and elephant". The two animals are the symbols of the two major political parties in the US. The elephant represents (象征) the Republicans, whose candidate (候选人), President George W Bush, is trying to defeat the donkey to win his second term. The donkey represents the Democrats, whose candidate, John Kerry, is trying to kick the elephant out of the White House. Republicans think the elephant is powerful and clever, but the Democrats argue it is stupid and conservative (守旧的). In return, the Republicans regard the donkey as stubborn (倔强的) and silly but the Democrats say it is humble, plain, smart and courageous. The Republicans have been sending emails to Bush supporters and journalists with the header, "An Elephant Never Forgets" , said party spokeswoman Heather Layman. Elephants are known for their long memories. The emails suggest that Bush will keep his promises, while Kerry will not stick to his words. It is interesting that both symbols were created by a single person, Thomas Nast, a famous political cartoonist of the late 19th century. During the election in 1874, Nast drew a cartoon, in which a donkey in a lion's skin frightened an elephant marked "Republican". 54. In the passage, the donkey stands for __________. A. the White House B. the Republicans C. the Democrats D. John Kerry

55. What does "kick the elephant out of the White House" mean? A. Drive the animal out of the White House. B. Drive President Bush out of power.

C. Keep the elephant out of the White House. D. Insist on Bush's being elected. 56. In the eyes of the Republicans, the donkey is considered as __________. A. clever B. foolish C. polite D. brave

57. Which of the following in NOT true?

A. The same artist created the two symbols. B. The emails suggest Kerry will not carry out his promises. C. "An Elephant Never Forgets" means that an elephant has a good memory. D. John Kerry is a Democrat. C People enjoy taking trips. But what are the reasons they leave home? One reason is for education. People travel because they want to broaden their horizons to learn about other people and other places. They are curious about other cultures. When people are tourists, they get a quick look at different ways of living. Even a short look at another kind of lifestyle is an important lesson. On a trip, a person can learn directly by visiting museums and historic spots. What does a tourist learn who sees the art museums, visits the historical places and other scenic spots in Paris and shops along the River Seine? He gets a vivid picture, a real life of one of the French people. He learns about their attitudes, how they feel about business, beauty and history. What about the tourist who goes to Hong Kong? Does he get the same information that he could get from a book? He might read that Hong Kong is crowded, that there is less than 200 square meters of space for each person. But seeing and feeling the lack of space will impress him much more. He might read that there are nearly 200 vehicles for every kilometer of roadway. But the sight of so many vehicles parked along the roadside would be a much more vivid lesson. The tourist to Hong Kong will never forget the contrasts: the straight vertical lines of tall modern buildings and the moving lines of boats that people live in. 58. Why do people leave home to travel according to the passage? A. For education. C. To enjoy themselves. different lifestyle. 59. What do we learn from the passage about Paris? B. For adventure. D. 61. What does the passage tell us about traveling? A. It makes our life more interesting. C. It helps develop our personalities. B. It enables us to get first-hand knowledge. D. It brings about changes in our lifestyle. D Deserts are found where there is little rainfall or where rain for a whole year falls in only a few weeks' time. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive if the rain is spread throughout the year. If it falls, within one or two months and the rest of the year is dry, those plants may die and a desert may form. Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sand across the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high. There is, however, much more to a desert than sand. In the deserts of the southwestern United States, cliffs (悬崖) and deep valleys were formed from thick mud that once lay beneath a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up. Wind, sand, rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert, mountains are always changing—very, very slowly — as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock. Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and

考单招——上高职单招网 www.danzhaowang.com
insects that have adapted to life in the desert. During the heat of the day, a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.
62. Many plants may survive in deserts when___________. A. the rain is spread out in a year C. there is little rain in a year A. sand piles up gradually C. the sea has dried up over the years A. too much sand C. nothing except sand B. the rain falls only in a few weeks D. it is dry all the year round B. there is plenty of rain in a year D. pieces of rock get smaller

63. Sand dunes are formed when___________.

64. The underlined sentence in the third paragraph probably means that in a desert there is_______. B. more sand than before D. something else besides sand

65. It can be learned from the text that in a desert____________. A. there is no rainfall throughout the year B. life exists in rough conditions C. all sand dunes are a few feet high D. rocks are worn away only by wind and heat

第四部分:书面表达(20 分) 第一节:阅读填空题:(10 分) 阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在文后第 66 至第 75 小题的空格里填上适当的单词或短 语。注意:每空不超过 3 个单词。 “What should I wear today?” That’s a question you might ask yourself in the morning. For some kids, the answer is the same every day—a school uniform. Officials in Elmira, New York, are now debating whether students should wear uniforms in the next school year. Uniforms would contribute to “building pride within our school and community,” Elmira Superintendent Raymond Bryant told WR News. Elmira is one of many school districts across the country considering a uniform policy. Ten years ago, 3 percent of all public schools required that students wear uniforms. By 2004, that number had risen to 14 percent. Some school officials support the policy, hoping that uniforms will encourage students to focus on their work. Opponents, however, say students should be allowed to express themselves

through their clothing. Uniforms make schools better places in which to learn, supporters say. They argue that dress codes often improve discipline and lessen bullying and teasing. “I think uniforms help students focus on their academics and not the latest fashion,” Principal Megan Mannion old WR News. Her school, Rankin Elementary School in Akron, Ohio, has had a uniform policy since 1995. “The best thing I like about our uniform is the style, especially the shirts and sweaters,” says Rankin fourth grader Clifton Harris. It’s not just the look that makes the grade. Others argue that the new uniforms cut costs. “You save money to buy casual clothes for home,” adds Rankin student Asmar Epps. A uniform requirement violates(破坏) the right to freedom of expression, say some people. That right is protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. “I think students should choose their own clothing style, rather than be told to wear a specific uniform,” fifth grader Kaylie Vilavong from Aurora, Missouri, told WR Mews. Her classmates Wade Fleetwood agrees. “Kids should be allowed to wear different styles of clothes.” Some parents are worried about the expense. Elmira would offer uniforms at a price between $16 and $26. “What’s the school district going to do for people who can’t afford them?” asked one Elmira father at a recent public meeting. Should public school students be required to wear 66? Supporters’ opinions Building 67 within schools and communities Encouraging students to pay more attention to their 68. Making schools better places in which to 69. Preventing students focusing on the latest 70. Opponents’ opinions Students’ opinions Parents’ worries Students should 71 themselves by their clothing.
