You either have it, or you don’t-a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose themselves in the next street? Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it. “Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, research director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.” Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions: ? If you are using a map, turn it so that it relates to the way you are facing. ? If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree -something easy to recognize. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route. ? Simplify the way for finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or wells inthe countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are. Now you will never get lost again! 56. Scientists believe that ______. A. some babies are born with a sense of direction B. people learn a sense of direction as they grow older

C. people never lose their sense of direction D. everybody has a sense of direction from birth 57. What is true of 7-year-old children according to the passage? A. They never have a sense of direction without maps. B. They should never be allowed out alone if they lack a sense of direction. C. They have a sense of direction and can find their way around. D. They can develop a good sense of direction if they are driven around in a car. 58. If you leave your bike in a strange place, you should ______. A. tie it to a tree so as to prevent it from being stolen B. draw a map of the route to help remember where it is C. avoid taking the same route when you come back to it D. remember something easily recognizable on the route 59. According to the passage, the best way to find your way around is to ______. A. ask policemen or other people around for directions B. use wells, streams, and streets to guide yourself C. remember your route by looking out for steps and stairs D. count the number of landmarks that you see

Young men often give flowers to young women when they are in love. This tradition may have come from Turkey. In the 1700s in Turkey, it was quite popular for people in love to send each other baskets full of strange things. The baskets were delivered secretly to the person who was receiving it. Usually, an old woman who sold flowers or fruit on the street left the basket beside the person’s door. These baskets included a variety of “gifts”: flowers, stones, feathers, wax, and even charcoal. Each thing in the basket had a special meaning. By figuring out the secret message contained in each item, the person who received the basket began to understand little by little the true feeling of the person who sent it. This idea of sending gifts of love with secret meanings quickly spread to Germany, France, and England. However, as time passed, only flowers remained popular. An innocent bunch of flowers told young ladies about the feeling in the hearts of

young men. Each different flower held a different meaning. For example, the flowers from an orange tree meant, “You are beautiful and pure.”Pink carnations meant, “My love for you is strong and great.”Yellow roses, on the other hand, meant, “I saw you with someone else.” Many flower dictionaries were made to help young people in love understand the meaning of the flowers they received. Not all of the dictionaries agreed, however, on the meaning of each flower, so a person had to be careful about the flowers they chose to send. By the 1880s, using flowers to send messages had fallen out of fashion, and the more direct way of sending love letters began. Today, flowers are still considered a lovely gift, but the meaning for each kind of flower has been lost. 60. What did the items in the basket explain to the receiver? A. The receiver’s appearance. C. The feeling of the receiver. B. The sender’s emotions. D. The love between them.

61. If a French young man of the 1850s wanted to send his beloved girl a gift, he would probably choose . A. flowers and feathers C. pink carnations letter 62. The text suggests that . A. Turks still keep their tradition of sending baskets B. flower dictionaries were made to help young ladies C. people still use flowers to send secret messages D. people don’t use flower dictionaries any longer 63. What is likely to be the title of this text? A. Say it with Flowers C. Strange Tradition Flowers B. Flowers and Secrets D. Love for C Mother Knows Best? Once while being prepared for a television interview, I was chatting with the host about stay-at-home fathers. I made the point that one reason we’re seeing more B. yellow roses D. nothing except a love

考单招——上高职单招网
stay-at-home dads may be that it’s no longer a given (a known fact) that a man makes more money than his wife. Many families now take earning power into account when deciding which parent will stay home. At that point, one of the male crew members commented, almost to himself but loud enough for my benefits, “It should be the better parent who stays at home”. A lot of guys say things like that. I was a stay-at-home father for eight years, so what he said made me excited. It implied that our family’s choice could only have been correct if I was a “better” parent than my wife. I think men shoot themselves in the foot with this kind of thinking. I suppose an argument could have been made that when I began staying home my wife was the “better” parent: she had spent more time with our son, could read him better and calm him more quickly. And given a choice, he’d have picked her over me. But as she was the more employable one, my wife went out to work and I looked after our son. Know what? I caught up. Because of the increased time I spent with him, I soon knew him well, understood what he needed and could look after him more or less as my wife could. Actually, the experience helped me unlock one of the world’s great secrets: Women are good at looking after the children because they do it. It’s not because of any born female gift or a mother’s instinct-which I think is mostly learned anyway. It’s because they put in the time and attention required to become good at the job. Women obviously get a biological head start from giving birth and nursing, but over the long term experience is more important. When I got the experience myself, I was good, too. As good? I don’t know. Who cares? Children are not made of glass. Other people are capable of looking after them besides Mom. 64.Which of the following does the first paragraph imply? A. Men are no longer given the chance to stay at home as they used to. B. In some families the wives are earning more than their husbands. C. The author is telling the readers that he works in the TV station. D. There are more stay-at- home fathers than stay-at-home mothers. 65. The author decided to stay at home eight years ago because ______. A. it was easier for his wife to find a job B. he thought he was the better father C. their son liked him a little bit better D. he was earning more than his wife did

66. Women are better than men at taking care of children because______. A. they were born with the ability B. they love children and enjoy it C. they spend more time doing it D. they have learned it at school 67. Which of the following is the author’s conclusion drawn at the end? A. He is better than his wife at taking care of children. B. He is as good as his wife at taking care of children. C. Either fathers or mothers can take care of children. D. Both fathers and mothers cannot take care of children.

There seems never to have been a civilization without toys, but when and how they developed is unknown. They probably came about just to give children something to do. In the ancient world, as is today, most boys played with some kinds of toys and most girls with another. In societies where social roles are rigidly determined, boys pattern their play after the activities of their fathers and girls are being prepared, even in play, to step into the roles and responsibilities of the adult world. What is remarkable about the history of toys is not so much how they changed over the centuries but how much they have remained the same. The changes have been mostly in terms of craftsmanship, mechanics, and technology. It is the universality of toys with regard to their development in all parts of the word and their persistence to the present that is amazing. In Egypt, America, China, Japan and among the Arctic(北极的) people, generally the same kinds of toys appeared. Variations depended on local customs and way of life because toys imitate their surrounding. Nearly every civilization had dolls, little weapons, toy soldiers, tiny animals and vehicles. Because toys can be generally regarded as a kind of art form, they have not been subject to technological leaps that characterize inventions for adult use. The progress from the wheel to the cart to the automobile is a direct line of ways up. The progress from a rattle(拨浪鼓) used by a baby in 3,000BC to one used by an infant today, however, is not characterized by inventiveness. Each rattle is the product of the artistic tastes of the times and subject to the limitations of available materials. 68. The reason why the toys most boys play with are different from those that girls play with is that________.

考单招——上高职单招网
A. their social roles are rigidly determined B. they like challenging activities C. most boys would like to follow their fathers’ professions D. boys like to play with their fathers while girl with their mothers 69. One aspect of “the universality of toys” lies in the fact that________. A. the basic characteristics of toys are the same all over the world B. technological advances have greatly improved the durability of toys C. the exploration of the universe has led to the creation of new kinds of toys D. the improvement of craftsmanship in making toys depends on the efforts of universities 70. Which of the following is the author’s view on the historical development of toys? A. Toys are playing an increasingly important role in shaping a child’s character. B. The toy industry has witnessed great leaps in technology in recent years. C. The craftsmanship in toy - making has remained essentially unchanged. D. Toys have remained basically the same all through the centuries. 71. Regarded as a kind of art form, toys________. A. reflect the pace of social progress B. are not characterized by technological progress C. follow a direct line of ascent D. also appeal greatly to adults 72. The author uses the example of a rattle to show that________. A. it often takes a long time to introduce new technology into toy - making B. even the simplest toys can reflect the progress of technology C. even a simple toy can mirror the artistic tastes of the time D. in toy - making there is a continuity in the use of materials

第二节阅读以下短文,根据各小题的具体要求,简要回答问题。(共 3 个小题,每小 题 2 分,满分 6 分。) Since Shanghai's average altitude is only 3 meters above sea level, Sheshan Hill, with its highest point at only 97 meters, is often jokingly termed a "mountain". If some people in the city say that they are going to climb a mountain in Shanghai, the destination will definitely be Sheshan Hill. As one of the earliest forest parks in Shanghai, Sheshan is a good place to free you from the hustle and bustle(熙熙攘攘) of the concrete forest. Shanghai Sheshan National Holiday Resort is located at the northwest of Songjiang District, 30 kilometers away from downtown Shanghai. The East Sheshan Hill is 74 meters high and is famous for its bamboo shoots. In spring, there is a bamboo shoot festival. The park will provide tourists with tools to dig out the bamboo shoots, and if you like, you can take them home to cook the typical Shanghai dish --- bamboo shoot stewed(炖) with pork. According to the records, Emperor Kangxi arrived in Songjiang and he was full of praise for the bamboo shoot for its tenderness, crispy and freshness, especially for its exclusive orchid fragrance, so he baptized Sheshan Hill "Orchid Bamboo Shoot Hill". Thereafter, the bamboo shoot was known all over the country. Between the East and West Sheshan Hills a mid-air cable is constructed, which enable the tourists to have a hearty appreciation of the sceneries of the hills. Occupying an area of onehectare with a height of 20 meters, Sheshan Catholic Church (officially named China Holy Virgin Cathedral) was built in 1863 and rebuilt in 1935. It is famed as the second grandest church in East Asia. On Holy Virgin's Day every May, pilgrims swarm here from all places in the country to line up in long queues in entering the church for mass(弥撒). It is really a spectacular occasion. Astronomical observatory(天文台) is the other famous architecture on the hill. It serves as one of the major observatories in the observatory network in the country. The building of observatory library now also serves as an observatory museum. 73. In the author’s opinion, why isn’t Sheshan Hill a real mountain?(回答词数不超过 8 个)

It is one of the most important natural and historical areas in Florida. Paynes Prairie is located near Gainesville. It is large, 21,000 acres. This protected land is called a preserve. The Florida Park Service manages the preserve. The Paynes Prairie basin was formed when limestone dissolved and the ground settled. It is covered by marsh (沼泽) and wet prairie vegetation. There are areas of open water. During brief periods it has flooded enough to be considered a lake. Except for that, the basin has changed little through time. Man has lived on Paynes Prairie a very long time. He lived there as far back as 10,000 B.C. At one time, the Seminoles lived there. The prairie is thought to have been named after King Payne, a Seminole chief. During the late 1600s,the largest cattle ranch in Florida was on Paynes Prairie. Today, Paynes Prairie is preserved land. It is occupied by visitors and Florida Park Service employees. William Bartram visited Paynes Prairie. Bartram was the first person who portrayed (described) nature through personal experience as well as scientific observation. He lived 200 years ago. He visited Paynes Prairie in 1774. At that time he described. He called Paynes Prairie the“great Alachua Savannah.” Most of the animal life, which Bartram described, is still here. A large number of sandhill cranes, hawks and waterfowl are here in winter. The animal diversity is increased by the presence of pine flatwoods, hammock, swamps and ponds. The Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is open year round. The Florida Park Service works hard so that the park will appear as it did in the past. It offers many opportunities for recreation. At the park you can camp and picnic. You can hike and
