Too much TV-watching can harm children’s ability to learn and even reduce their chances of getting a college degree, new studies suggest in the latest effort to examine the effects of television on children. One of the studies looked at nearly 400 northern California third-graders. Those with TVs in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedroom TVs . A second study, looking at nearly 1000 grown-ups in New Zealand, found lower education levels among 26-year –olds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. But the results don’t prove that TV is the cause and don't rule out that already poorly motivated youngsters (年轻人)may watch lots of TV. Their study measured the TV habits of 26-year-olds between ages5 and 15. Those with college degrees had watched an average of less than two hours of TV per weeknight during childhood, compared with an average of more than 2. 5

hours for those who had no education beyond high school. In the California study, children with TVs in their rooms but no computer at home scored the lowest while those with no bedroom TV but who had home computers scored the highest. While this study does not prove that bedroom TV sets caused the lower scores, it adds to accumulating findings that children shouldn't have TVs in their bedrooms. 21. According to the California study, the low-scoring group might _________. A. have watched a lot of TV C. be unable to go to college B. not be interested in math D. have had computers in their bedrooms

22. What is the researchers' understanding of the New Zealand study results? A. Poorly motivated 26-year-olds watch more TV. B. Habits of TV watching reduce learning interest. C. TV watching leads to lower education levels of the 15-year-olds. D. The connection between TV and education levels is difficult to explain 23. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs? A. More time should be spent on computers. B. Children should be forbidden from watching TV. C. 'IV sets shouldn't be allowed in children's bedrooms, D. Further studies on high-achieving students should be done 24. What would be the best title for this text? A. Computers or Television B. Effects of Television on Children D. Television and Children's Learning

C. Studies on TV and College Education Habits

Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner. Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sévigné in Paris. Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities(设备)to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognised in the form of a Military Medal by the French government. In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at

the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later. Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity(辐射 能). Irene Joliot-Curie died from leukemia on March 17, 1956. 29. Why was Irene Curie awarded a Military Medal? A. Because she received a degree in mathematics. B. 31. When was the second child of Irene Curie and Frederic Joliot born? A. In 1932. B. In 1927. C. In 1897. D. In 1926.

Why is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys? The answer depends largely on cultural values as well as personal experiences. To the Egyptians, green was a color that represented the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims, it means heaven. Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. In China, children are given money in a red envelope to bring good fortune in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs. Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect themselves against evils(灾祸). People’s choice of colors is also influenced by their bodies’ reactions ( 反 应)toward them. Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally and physically. People who work in green environment have been found to have fewer stomach aches. Red can cause a person’s blood pressure to rise and increase people’s appetites( 食欲 ). Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. Similarly, many commercial websites will have a red “Buy Now” button because red is a color that easily catches a person’s eye. Blue is another calming color. Unlike red, blue can cause people to lose appetite. So if you want to eat less, some suggest that eating from blue plates can

help. The next time you are deciding on what to wear or what color to decorate your room, think about the color carefully. 33. Muslims regard green as a symbol of heaven mainly because of their A.cultural values B.commercial purposes C.personal experiences D.physical reactions to the color 34. How to Love Your Parents
Even if you think that your parents are mean-spirited at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part a source of who you are. Here are some ways to love your parents. 36 A gentle“good morning”and“I love you”will warm a coldest heart.

You can use these moments to learn from them when you’re off on your own. It’s OK to get angry but angry actions don’t help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, journal about your feelings, or talk to a friend.

37 Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don’t get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it’s cold, raining, snowing, or too hot. How is everything going on with you? You asked me in your last letter about my plan for the coming summer vacation. I am sorry that I didn’t reply without delay. How I wish I would read and reply to your e-mail as soon as I received it. However, I was busy preparing for my final exam at that time, which was of great importance for me. As a result, I had no choice but to completely focus on my study. I believe that if you were me, you would make the same choice. By the way, I have a busy schedule for my summer vacation. First, I will do a part-time job so that my interpersonal ( 人际关系的 ) skills will be improved. In addition, I will take a short trip to Beijing to take a summer course in the New Oriental School. Last but not least, maybe I will work as a volunteer for the school as a teaching assistant. That is my plan for the summer vacation. What’s yours? I am looking forward to your early reply.

Yours sincerely Li Hua 听力录音材料 Text 1 W: Swimming is my favourite sport. What about you? M: I like football, running and cycling. W: Oh, yes. Beijing is a good place for cycling. Text 2 W: I’m looking for a textbook for my psychology course. It’s called “Introduction to Educational Psychology”. Do you have it? M: Yes, we do. You’ll find it in Section 24 on the top shelf. Text 3 W: How long may I keep these? M: Two weeks. If you cannot return them on time, you will be fined. W: I think I had better read them fast. Text 4 W: How long did you have the exam? M: We were given two hours, but I finished in less than half the time. Text 5 M: Tina, make sure that you have everything ready for the interview before we are far away from home. W: That really reminds me. I left my application form on my table when I rushed out of the house just now. Text 6 M: Excuse me, Miss. W: Yes? M: Do you know where I should board Flight 810 to Hong Kong? W: Oh, I heard Flight 810 is boarding at Gate 7. M: But where is Gate 7? W: Maybe I can take you there. M: Thank you very much. W: You’re welcome. Is this your first visit to Paris? M: Yes. W: Well, I’m going to London. What about you? M: I’m going to Hong Kong. W: Have a good flight. Before you arrive, I’ll be in a London hotel, asleep. M: Yes. It’s a long flight. W: Still, you can watch a film. M: It sounds interesting. Text 7

M: Excuse me. Can you tell me how I can find books on computer technology? W: Sure. See the computers there? M: Yes. W: You can use any of the computers to find whatever books you want. M: So if I am looking for a book on computer technology, I. . . W: Just typing the title or the author’s name. M: Well, I don’t know either the title or the author’s name. I simply want to find some ABC books concerning computer technology. W: Then you may type the subject heading—computer. Thousands of books related to computers will come out. You can scan and find the books you are interested in. M: So every book in the library can be found either by the title, the author’s name, or the subject heading? W: Right. Text 8 M: Hey, Julie. You’ll have to go to Toronto in two weeks. W: What’s my objective there? M: To help the branch office there budget for the coming year. W: How long will I stay there? M: You can finish within a week if two of you are working on it. And you’ll have another week to relax there. W: Who should I contact when I arrive? Just one tablet a day for three days. And if you still feel bad, you should see a doctor. W: Thank you. And can you give me something for sunburn? My little boy was out in the park all day yesterday. M: This after-sun cream is good. But you should always put on some cream before you go out in the sun as well. W: Yes, I’ll take some of that, too. Text 10 W: I usually get up at 6: 30. I’ve been always an early riser. When my husband was alive, we had to be up by 5o’clock. He was a long-distance train driver. Before breakfast I have a cup of tea and listen to music on the radio. Then between 7 and 8 I get dressed and eat breakfast—a boiled egg and a large glass of orange juice—I never have anything else. Then at 8 o’clock I always watch breakfast television—for the news and the weather. And then I usually have a short rest until lunch. That’s always at 12. We have a big lunch here—soup, meat, potatoes, vegetables, always a pudding.

After lunch I like being taken out in my wheelchair, or even in a car, if there’s anyone to do that. I hate staying indoors. I like looking in the shop windows, or sitting in a park and watching the world go by. Sometimes someone will read to me and write some letters. I’m near 83 now.
