A
Growing up in Conway, South Carolina, I was always athletic and competitive. One afternoon, my brother grabbed me in the yard, and I felt some kind of pop. About an hour later, I couldn’t get up from a chair. Over the weekend, my joints(关节) swelled up. My mother took me to the hospital. It took nearly six months to check what was wrong with me. Then I was put on treatment. But I had so much joint damage that I couldn’t run like I used to. My dad was a serious golfer. One day he said, “Let’s try golf.” He carried me onto the course. Seeing him hit those good shots made me want to do it too. It wasn’t easy at first, because I had a lot of pain in my hands. I’d played golf, but it had never really caught my interest—it was too quiet for me. But I was happy to be outside, to have a chance of competing again, and I fell in love with it. Later I made the high school team, but I got frustrated when I didn’t win, so I worked harder. Golf was the most challenging game I’d ever played. I got a golf scholarship to the University of South Carolina and turned professional after I graduated. I still take medication, and I’m stiff and in pain sometimes. But I’ve got used to that. I probably wouldn’t be a professional athlete if I hadn’t got sick. The experience taught me patience, and I learned to take nothing for granted. I know how happy I am to do what I do. 11. What do we know about the author from Paragraph 1? A. He was born with swelled joints. B. His joints healed very quickly. C. He completely recovered after the treatment. D. The cause of his disease was found out six months later. 12. What inspired the author to play golf at the beginning? A. His love for golf. B. His interest in sports. C. His father’s good performance. D. His unwillingness to stay indoors. 13. Which of the following can NOT be used to describe the author? A. Active. B. Competitive C. Self-pitying. D. Patient. 14. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. It was the author’s brother who first became aware that he had a disease. B. Suffering a lot of pain in his hands, the author wasn’t interested in playing golf at first. C. After founding a high school team, the author played harder and became professional. D. The author thought he should cherish everything he had, even his disease. 15. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Playing through pain B. The burden lifted C. A bitter fight D. Standing tall

B Most gift-giving shows nothing more than the spirit of love and friendship. But it is possible to form some connections between the kinds of things bought and the people who buy them. Clothing. The clothes you wear tell something about your personality. They tell the world not only how you want to be seen but how you see yourself as well. When someone gives you something to wear that is suitable to your self-image, they are saying, “I agree with you. I like you the way you are.” Such a gift should be taken as a form of compliment(恭维). On the other hand, a gift of clothing that does not match your personality could be disagreement to your taste. Expensive gifts. Naturally, some gifts like jewelry will be more expensive than others. But some people give higher priced gifts than necessary for the situation. Someone who gives an expensive gift often feels that he should receive more praise than if he had given a less expensive gift. Therefore he is giving himself a gift, too: to show he is better than others. Homemade gifts. Making something by hand has become the exception in many countries today and giving a homemade gift is sometimes considered valuable. If you receive a homemade gift, you are lucky. It may not be made perfectly, but it will show a certain quality of love. No matter what the results of the homemade gift look like, remember it is the thought that counts(有 价值,起作用). Books. People who give books as gifts either like reading or would like everyone to think they do. A good way to know this is to find out whether or not the giver bought the book according to how large it is. If you happen to receive a large heavy book, its giver may be much more interested in the way things appear than in the way they actually are. Anyhow, giving a book can be a way of sharing a feeling or a newly learned meaning. The giver is probably trying to say to you what the books said to him. 16. Expensive gifts may mean_____. A. friendship B. priceless treasure C. a sense of being better than others D. deep love that lasts for a long time 17. According to the passage, homemade gifts____. A. are perfect B. show love between lovers only. C. should be valued D. can be bought from shops. 18. A thin book as a gift probably means____. A. a beautiful and expensive book B. a book written by a famous writer C. a rare and valuable book D. a book which is worth reading 19. Which of the following gifts is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. Clothing. B. Flowers. C. Jewelry D. Books

20. Which of the followings best expresses the main idea of this passage? A. Gift-giving may show the giver’s personality in some way. B. Most gift-giving shows the spirit of love and friendship. C. Homemade gifts are more precious than expensive ones. D. We should be careful in choosing and giving expensive ones C Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is. However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in. This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it. When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get th ere at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway. Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into. 21. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about__________. A. the reasons for success B. the meaning of success C. the standards of success D. the importance of success 22. Paragraph 2, the underlined word that refers to__________. A. being good at something B. setting a practical goal C. putting in more time D. succeeding in life 23. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because_____________. A. work makes one feel pain B. one tends to enjoy his work C. one gives up his work easily D. it takes a lot of time to succeed 24. What can be infer from Paragraph 4? A. Successful people like to show their great skills. B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent. C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life. D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.

25. What is the main theme of the passage? A. Having a goal is vital to success. B. Being good is different from being great. C. One cannot succeed without time and practice. D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success. D Students who date in middle school have significantly worse study skills, are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol and tobacco use than their single classmates, according to a new research from the University of Georgia. “Romantic relationships are a trademark of adolescence, but very few studies have examined how adolescents differ in the development of these relationships,” said Pamela Orpinas, study author and professor in the College of Public Health and head of the Department of Health Promotion and Behavior. Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from 6th to 12th grade. Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviors, including the use of drugs and alcohol. Their teachers completed questionnaires about the students’ academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had consistently the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school. “At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills.” according to the journal article. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success, such as doing work for extra credit, being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters. “Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications of dating a co-worker,” Orpinas said, “when the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and divert (转移) attention from studying.” “Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school,” Orpinas concluded. 26. According to the passage, students who date in middle school may_____ A. have poorer academic performances B. be more likely to hurt others C. enjoy better school lives D. are less likely to use alcohol and tobacco 27. When doing his study, Orpinas_____. A. followed a group of students of 6th and 12th grade B. completed a survey and a report each year C. completed questionnaires about the students’ academic efforts D. found that the students’ study skills have connection with their frequency of dating
