The Shawshank Redemption --How is a man reborn? This film, The Shawshank Redemption, is a special work. In this film there are no love stories, no handsome actors, no scenes which our actors fight vehemently, even no actresses. There are only some grubby guys in the prison. We watch them saying, working, and listen to them calling names by using the F-word. But at the end of the film we will find ourselves are deeply struck by this film. As we can see, it`s this film that encourages us most, gives us hopes to overcome difficulties in lives, lights our pathes to the success. Actually it`s not a crime and gangster film about lives in prison, but a heartening story just like the film Forrest Gump. In my words, this film tells a simple but significant story. That is "How can a man reborn?" If I put up this question to you, how can you answer it? Maybe hundreds answers will be spoken out. But the answer this film gives to us are three words: setback, friend, hope. If we write down the setbacks which our major
character,Andy Dufresne, experienced, we can image how despondent he would be at that moment. He is accused of murdering his wife and the man whom she has an affair, but in fact he is innocent. He is abused by homosexuals in prison and has to help warden to launder the money. The differences between banker outside and prisoner inside give him unbearable pressure. And the cruellest thing is that he is serving two consecutive life sentences, which means he has to spend the rest of his life into the Shawshank Maximum Security Prison. All of these setbacks are too unfair for Andy. Most of us will be defeated if we were in such a terrible condition. But Andy don`t. He survives from this hell. He not only lives in this hell for almost 20 years, but also escapes from it eventually. Because of these setbacks, his escaping is so meaningful. Let me put it another way. If Andy didn`t experience such terrible setbacks,we would see his escaping as a ordinary thing that a prisoner cheats guards and breaks prison. But before he breaks the prison,Andy suffers many outbacks,so we see his escaping in a positive way. Andy fights against the prison and guards
for his life, his future, and his belief. Think of the words said by Red,Andy`s cell mate,"Andy Dufresne who crawled through a river of shit and came out clean on the other side." It conveys too much. Red is Andy`s best friend in prison. I can suppose that it`s Red who gives encouragement to Andy and make Andy feels a little easy in prison at the beginning. Without Red,Andy may not live so long. It makes me think of proverb, "Go alone if you want to go fast, and go together if you want to go far." Red gives Andy too much, posters, hammers, and information. But the most important thing is friendship. And Andy does`t forget Red,too. When he prepares to escape,he tells Red something about the little box under the oak tree. Andy asks Red to promise to hold the hope of releasing. Red keeps his words and finally goes out and meets Andy again on the sunny seashore of Mexico. Redemption belongs to not only Andy, but also Red. Andy clings to hope and never gives up. He
said,"Remember, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and good thing never dies." Hope keeps Andy different from others. He just walks leisurely as if he
were at the park. He holds the hope and passes the hope to his friends. Andy not only saves himself but also others. It is hard to say whether hope gives Andy strength or Andy makes hope appears in prison. Maybe both. I can`t image that Andy can dig the tunnel for almost 20 yeas. In other ways I can`t image that he can hold such a thin hope for 20 years. Perhaps we don`t find the strength out of hope,so we don`t grasp it.But Andy does, so he can make a difference. Maybe hope is indeed a good thing, and good thing never dies.
