第三部分: 阅读理解(共 20 小题; 每小题 2 分, 满分 40 分)
阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项, 选出最佳选项。 A Elizabeth Freeman was born in 1742 to African American parents who were slaves. At the age of six months she was adopted, along with her sister, by John Ashley, a wealthy Massachusetts slaveholder. She became known as “Mumbet”. For nearly 30 years Mumbet served the Ashley family. One day, Ashley?s wife tried to hit Mumbet?s sister with a spade(铁锹). Mumbet protected her sister and took the blow instead. Furious, she left the house and refused to come back. When the Ashleys tried to make her return, Mumbet turned to a lawyer, Theodore Sedgewick, with whose help she sued(起诉) for her freedom. While serving the Ashleys, Mumbet had listened to many discussions of the new Massachusetts law. If the law said that all people were free and equal, then she thought it should be true of her. Finally, Mumbet won her

freedom---- the first slave in Massachusetts to achieve this under the new law. Strangely enough, after the trial(审判), the Ashleys asked Mumbet to come back and work for them as a paid worker. She turned it down. Instead, she went to work for Segdewick. Mumbet died in 1829, but her story lived on in her children. One of her great-grandchildren was W.E.B. Du Bois, one of the founders of the NAACP, and an important writer and spokesperson for African American civil rights. Mumbet?s tombstone still stands in the Massachusetts cemetery(公墓). It reads: “She was born a slave and remained a slave for nearly thirty years. She could neither read nor write, yet in her own field she had no equal.” 51. Why did Mumbet run away from the Ashleys? A. She wanted to get paid. B. She wanted to work for a lawyer. C. She was hit and got angry D. She had to care for her sister. 52. Which of the following is true about Mumbet? A. It was not until she was adopted by John Ashley that she became a slave. B. After the trial, she worked for the Ashleys as a paid worker. C. She was treated unequally because she couldn?t read or write. D. One of her great-grandchildren played a role in setting up the NAACP. 53. What is the test mainly about? A. A story of a famous African writer and spokesperson B. The friendship between a lawyer and a slave C. The life of a brave African American woman D. A trial that shocked the whole world B There are an extremely large number of ants worldwide. Each individual (个体的) ant hardly weigh anything, but together they weigh almost the same as all of mankind. They also live nearly everywhere, except on frozen mountain tops or around the poles. For animals their size, ants have been surprisingly successful, largely due to their wonderful social behavior. In groups that vary in size from a few hundred to tens of millions, they organize their lives with a clear division of labor. Even more amazing is how they achieve this level of organization. While we use sound and sight to communicate, ants depend mostly on pheromone (信息素), which is a kind of chemical released by individuals and smelled or tasted by fellow members of a group. When an ant finds food, it produces a pheromone that will lead others straight to where the food is. When an ant comes under attack or is dying, it sends out an alarm pheromone to warn the whole group to prepare for a defensive fight. In fact, when it comes to the art of war, ants have no equal. They are completely fearless and will take on an animal much larger than themselves, attacking in large groups and beating their target. They show so much devotion to their group that not only soldier ants but also worker ants will sacrifice their lives to help defeat an enemy. United and devoted, these little animals have survived on the earth for more than 140 million years, far longer than dinosaurs. Because they think as one, they have a united intelligence greater than you would expect from one small individual ant. 54. We can learn from the passage that ants are__________. A. unwilling to share food

B. not used to living in cold environment. C. more successful than mankind D. too many to achieve any organization 55. Ants can use pheromones for __________. A. tasting food B. communication C. warning enemies D. arranging labor 56. What does the underlined expression "take on" in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Suffer from. B. Give in to. C. Play with. 57. Ants have survived for so long mainly because of ____________. A. their social cooperation. B. their large group size. C. their fearless attack. D. their individual intelligence.

D. Fight against.

C The Pacific island nation of Nauru used to be a beautiful place. Now it is an ecological disaster area. Nauru?s heartbreaking story could have one good result---other countries might learn from its mistakes. For thousands of years, Polynesian people lived on the remote island of Nauru, far from western civilization. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798. He was the captain of the Hunter, a whaling ship. He called the island Pleasant Island. However, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with Europeans at first. Then whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and wines, which destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island. A ten-year civil war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900. Nauru?s real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered phosphate(磷酸盐)on the island. In fact, it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all phosphate, which is a very important fertilizer(肥料) for farming. The company began mining the phosphate. A phosphate mine is not a hole in the ground; it is a strip mine .when a company strip- mines, it removes the top layer of soil. Then it takes away the material it wants. Strip-mining totally destroys the land. Gradually, the lovely island of Nauru started to look like the moon. In 1968, Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world. Every year the government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate. Unfortunately, the leaders invested the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. In addition, they used millions more dollars for personal expenses. Soon people realized that they had a terrible problem---their phosphate was running out. Ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing. By 2000, Nauru was almost financially ruined. Experts say that it would take about $433,600,000 and more than 20 years to repair the island. This will probably never happen. 58. What might be the writer ?s purpose in writing the text? A. To seek help for Nauru?s problems. B. To show the importance of phosphate. C. To give a warning to other countries. D. To tell a heartbreaking story of a war.

59. What was Nauru like before the Europeans came? A. Rich and powerful. B. violent and mean. C. Peaceful and attractive. D. greedy and ignorant. 60. The ecological disaster in Nauru resulted from . A. soil pollution B. whale hunting C. the civil war D. phosphate overmining 61. Which of the following was a cause of Nauru?s financial problem? A. Its leaders misused the money. B. It spent too much repairing the island. C. The phosphate mining cost too much money. D. It lost millions of dollars in the war. 62. What can we learn about Nauru from the last paragraph? A. Its leaders think little of the experts? words. B. Its ecological damage is difficult to repair. C. The island is given up by the Nauruans. D. The phosphate mines were destroyed. D In its early history, Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses, and carts got stuck. An old joke popular at the time went like this: A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street. Asked if he needs help, he replies, "No, thanks. I've got a good horse under me." The city planner decided to build an underground drainage (排水) system, but there just wasn't enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two choices were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city. An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough persuaded the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city's streets by as much as 12 feet. This of course created a new problem: dirt almost covered the first floors of every building in Chicago. Building owners were faced with a choice: either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second floors into main floors, or lift the entire buildings to meet the new street level. Small wooden buildings could be raised easily. But what about large, heavy ones like Tremont Hotel, which was a six-story brick building? That's where George Pullman came in. He had developed some house-moving skills successfully. To lift a big building like the Tremont Hotel, Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews (螺旋千斤顶) beneath the building's foundation. One man was arranged to operate each section of roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman's signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, raising the building slowly. Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stay open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn't even notice anything. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago's early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago's waste water was flowing efficiently into the Chicago River, the city's next step was to clean the polluted river. 63. The author mentions the joke to show ______. A. horses were very common in Chicago. B. Chicago's streets were full of mud. C. Chicago was dangerous because of the floods.

D. the Chicago people were extremely humorous. 64. The city planners were advised by Ellis Chesbrough to_______. A. cover the streets with dirt. B. lower the Chicago River. C. build an underground drainage system. D. let the water flow above the ground. 65. What can we conclude about the moving operation of the Tremont Hotel? A. It went on successfully as scheduled. B. It interrupted the business of the hotel. C. It involved Pullman turning ten jackscrews. D. It separated the building from its foundation. 66. The passage is mainly about the early Chicago's ______. A. popular life styles and their influences B. environmental disasters and their causes C. engineering problems and their solutions D. successful businessmen and their achievements
