There are beautiful beaches, adventure parks, nature parks and so much more. There are so many sights to see here. It is a pity to drive in a car and you’ll miss a great part of it. Australia is home to many animals and birds that can only be seen when moving slowly and going into the areas that they live. When you are on a bicycle, you have the advantage of being able to stop whenever you want to see an interesting animal or bird that you have never seen before. It is a quieter mode (方式) of transportation as well, so you might even be able to take a picture. When you are on the beach, you can breathe that clean air and view the beauty of the water and sand. It is a totally different experience from either simply sunbathing or passing it in a car. There are many choices of hiring a bicycle to experience the Gold Coast attractions. There are stores that will fit a bike perfectly to your size. These bikes for both adults and children are in many styles and colors to please any taste. If you have ever wanted to try a tandem bike（双人单车), now is your chance, because they have those too. A bicycle hire on Gold Coast is something that everyone should try at least once. B Last Friday, I was coming home late after spending time with friends and thought I’d go down to the $99 cent pizza place. On the way, I saw a man sitting on the stairs alone there. I’d seen him before every day I run late to work, but this time I had no place to rush off to. There was something about him, a quiet manner, different from many of other homeless people I had seen in New York City. I walked past him, went to the pizza place, and those 10 seconds waiting in line was enough to practice stepping outside of my usual, familiar flow. So with a few slices in hand, I went back to join him. I asked him if he was hungry. He said yes, but not for pizza because it made him uncomfortable. He’d rather have a few bucks for chicken and rice since it was easier on his stomach. It’s funny, in that moment, he became more real to me. This man I had seen almost every day was someone with specific conditions, needs, and experiences. We exchanged names and ended up talking for a little over an hour that night as Kevin told me stories from his life, how he had done things when “he was younger and didn’t know any better” and how he tried to make amends (补偿) but too much time had passed. He shared his views on the value for young adults to learn
the history of other people. He talked about his one wish being in his 60s before he leaves this earth, which is to share his story with the teenagers and young adults so they could avoid the mistakes he went through. Throughout the conversation, he eventually got his chicken and rice and gifted me a rose he had been carrying. Shortly afterwards, I made my way home, thinking to myself, “I met an amazing homeless person”. 24. The homeless man refused pizza because he _________. A. did not feel very hungry at that moment B. had something wrong with his stomach C. preferred some chicken and rice to pizza D. might feel ashamed to be given something 25. What’s the homeless man’s last wish? A. To become a lot younger again. B. To make amends for his early life. C. To have enough chicken and rice to eat. D. To teach the young not to follow his example. 26. It can be inferred from the text that ________. A. The homeless man is different from others B. The writer showed his pity to the homeless man C. What the homeless man thought shocked the writer D. What the homeless man did was not very meaningful 27. The writer’s purpose in writing the passage is to ________. A. share his experience C. express his thoughts B. show his generosity(慷慨) D. exchange his opinions
C This year some twenty-three hundred teenagers (young people aged from13~19) from all over the world will spend about ten months in U.S. homes. They will attend U.S. schools, meet U.S. teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn
new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world. Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George's family. In turn, George's son Mike spent a year in Fred's home in America. Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months' study the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected -much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities. Family life, too, was different. The father's word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual. Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car. At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. “I suppose I should criticize (批评) American schools,” he said. “It is far too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two." 28. The whole exchange program is mainly to _________. A. help teenagers in other countries know the real America B. send students in America to travel in Germany C. let students learn something about other countries D. have teenagers learn new languages 29. What did Fred and Mike agree on? A. America has better traffic. B. German schools were harder than American schools. C. Americans and Germans were both friendly D. There were more cars on the streets in America. 30. What is particular in American schools? A. There is some middle ground between the two teaching buildings.
B. There are a lot of after-school activities. C. Students usually take 14 subjects in all. D. Students go outside to enjoy themselves in a car 31. What did Mike think after experiencing the American school life? A. A better education should include something good from both America and Germany. B. German schools trained students to be better citizens C. American schools were not as good as German schools. D. The easy life in the American school was more helpful to students. D When a friend is sad about a tragedy (悲剧), it's hard to know how to comfort (安 慰) him/ her. But the worst thing you can do is say nothing. It could mean that you don't care. You don't have to say much. A single supportive phrase doesn't require absolutely perfect words to break the ice. Here are some conversation starters when difficult situations have your tongue tied. 1. A friend loses his baby. Don't say:"Don't worry. You're so young. You'll have another baby." Do say:" I'm so sorry. I can't begin to imagine what you are going through, but if you want to talk about it, call me anytime." 2. A guy deserts your friend. Don't say:"I never liked that rat bastard (坏蛋) anyway!" ( If the couple winds up reconciling (和解), you could end up losing your friend.) Do say:"Breaking up is always hard to deal with, but I'm here for you, whatever you need." 3. A friend has a death in the family. Don't say:"It's God's will." or "I know exactly how you feel." Do say:"I'm sorry about your loss. What can I do to help?" 4. A friend loses a job suddenly. Don't say:" Work is always boring. Those employers didn't suit you!" Do say:" I'm sorry for that, but I know there's an even better job waiting for you there. Let's think about possibilities." 5. Someone's pet dies.
Don't say:"Gee! It was only a cat!" or "My roommate doesn't like her dog and she is getting rid of her dog. Do you want it?" Do say:"I'm sorry, she was such a great cat. How long did you have it?" 32. Which of the following has the same meaning as the underlined part in paragraph 1? A. make your tongue shut B. tie your tongue in order not to say. C. have no suitable words to say. D. say what you want freely. 33. As a whole, what's the best way to comfort your friend troubled with a tragedy? A. To show your sorrow and offer your help. B. To try to make the tragedy less serious. C. To tell your friend not to think about it any more. D. To do your best to make him/her cheerful again. 34. Though your friend is deserted, you'd better not say dirty words about her/ his friend because ________. A. it may be a sign that you don't care for your friend B. your friend might not like you to say that against him/ his friend C. they might get along well again and you might be deserted D. your friend might hate you in the future 35.Which of the following might be suitable words when your friend’s dog dies? A. Don’t worry too much. I’ll give you a good one. B. I’m sorry to hear that. It was such a good dog. C. I’m sorry you lost your dog. But it was at its ripe age. D. You must be sad about it. That’s enough. 第二节， （共 5 小题，每小题 2 分，满分 10 分） 根据短文内容，从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 THE Internet can cause a lot of anger when it doesn’t work properly. ___36_____. are “worse than dial-up (拨号上网)”, the astronaut Scott Kelly said on Twitter, a social networking service. This is because the Internet connection in space comes from a network of satellites (卫星) – the same satellites that NASA engineers on the ground use to communicate with astronauts on the International Space Station, according to The Atlantic. There is a lot of technology on the International Space Station, of course. ___38_____ Well, think about the distance that data has to travel. When an astronaut clicks on a website in space, that request first travels to a network of satellites far away from the station. This network is 22,000 miles (35,405 km) away from Earth, further away than the station itself. The satellites then send the signal (信号) down to a receiver on the ground below, and it deals with the request before returning its reply along the same path. This means that,__39 go from space to Earth so the Internet runs slowly. However, in the future the Internet is likely to improve for astronauts as NASA changes to laser (激光) -based systems. Already, engineers have sent a high-definition (高清的) video from the International Space Station to the ground on a laser beam (光束). It’s a “much faster” way to send data,___40________ , NASA said,”. W: And, well, I think the job, you know, includes the normal teaching hours. I suppose you'd have a thirty-five-hour week. M: Oh, really? When does the job start? W: Err, well, you know, at the beginning of September. Text 7 W: Hello, may I speak to Allison? W: Hello, this is Allison speaking. W: Janice here. Do you have time this evening? W: I suppose so. M: I think I'd need about 30 hours a week, including some Saturdays. What do you think? W: That's what I was thinking too. We don't want someone who has never worked in the office before. M: Yes. It might be helpful if one could speak a second language. W: That might prevent too many people asking for the jobs. What about the pay, William? M: What do you think would be the best to offer? W: I think it depends on experience. However, the lowest we could offer is about $9,000 per year. Text 10 Ladies and gentlemen, attention, please. Hi, Liming, Thanks for your message. I’m sorry about the delay I was really busy but happy here. I’m studying at Cambridge University now. At the beginning of the term, I couldn’t understand the teacher in class, for her English was quite different from what we had heard in class in China. However, my classmates are really friendly and the teachers are helpful. If I had problems, I would ask my teachers for help immediately. After class I talked with them in English as much as possible. Now my English has improved a lot. The British diet has too much sweet food. However, I don’t have a sweet tooth. Fresh fruit, vegetables and fish are a very important part of my diet. And I’m not too heavy, so I won’t have to diet. I’m quite healthy. Please send my best wishes to your family. Love, Lihua
