Researchers in Italy examined the tail wagging behavior of 30 dogs, catching their reaction to a range of stimuli(刺激物) with video cameras. To conduct the study they chose
15 male dogs and 15 female ones aged between one and six years. The dogs were all family pets whose owners had allowed them to take part in the experiment at Bari University. The dogs were placed in a large wooden box with an opening at the front to allow for them to view various stimuli. They were texted one at a time. The researchers led by Professor Giorgio Vallortigara of the University of Trieste found that when the dogs were shown their owners --- a positive experience --- their tails wagged energetically to the right side. When they were shown an unfamiliar human they wagged to the right, but with somewhat less enthusiasm. The appears of a cat again caused a right-hand side wag, although with less excitement again. The appearance of a large unfamiliar dog, similar to a German shepherd, changed to direction of tail wagging to the left. Researchers supposed the dog was thinking of moving back. When the dogs were not shown any stimuli they tended to wag their tails to the left, suggesting they preferred company. While the changes in the tail wagging were not easily noticed without the aid of video, it was thought that the findings could help people judge the mood(心情) of dogs. Computer and video systems, for example, could be used by professional dog trainers to determine the mood of dogs that they were required to approach. 36. The video cameras were used to catch the dogs reactions because ____. A. it was easier to catch the dogs’ reaction changes in the tail wagging B. the dogs were put in the wooden boxes and tested one at a time. C. they enabled the dogs’ owners to know about their dogs’ habit D. the dogs wagged their tails in different directions when they were in different moods 37. The underlined word “they” refers to ____. A. the dogs B. the trainers C. the systems D. the researchers 38. The purpose of doing the experiment is ____. A. to train dogs for their owners B. to help people judge the mood of dogs C. to help dogs find company D. to help people choose their pet dogs B An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members. Fragile items, like those made of glass should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them on cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you. There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire breakouts during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens. During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near
objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the staircases at all times. If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object. If trapped in debris （瓦砾堆）, cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can find you. Use a whistle (哨子) if one is available. Never shout for help. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous amounts of dust. Do not light a match because you may burn yourself. Do not move about or kick up dust. 39. The purpose of the passage is to tell readers ____. A. the damage caused by earthquakes B. the rescue work after earthquakes C. what to do about earthquakes D. how to prevent earthquakes 40. The underlined word “Fragile” in Paragraph 2 probably mean ____. A. easily broken B. easily found C. expensive D. heavy 41. To reduce the injury from the earthquake, items made of glass should be put ____. A. on cupboards B. in the bedroom C. on a lower surface D. where children can’t reach them 42. During the earthquake, people are advised to ____. A. go out the building at once B. turn off power and gas immediately C. take shelter under a tree D. drive to a safe place 43. What should people NOT do when they are trapped in debris? A. Cover their mouth with a handkerchief. B. Tap on a people or wall for help. C. Use a whistle for help. D. Light a fire for help. Then soon some of her friends came to the church and they rushed over to greet her and sit with her. The candlelight service was beautiful and Alice got a lot of love from her old and new

书面表达 20% Dear Wang Qiang, I’m sorry to learn that your parents are always quarrelling with each other at present. I can fully understand your present feelings, for I had such experiences two year s ago. Now let me give you several suggestions. First, you can have a heart-to-heart talk with one parent at a time after they calm down. Second, you should tell them that you love them very much. Third, it would be a good idea if you promise them that you will study hard and that you won’t let them down. Last but not least, why not try to show them their old photos? On seeing these photos they will think of all the happy days they spent together. Maybe they will forgive each other. These are only my personal suggestions. I hope you will find these them helpful. Yours sincerely, Li Hua
