PROJECTS
(Oct/04-present) VGrADS (Virtual Grid Application Development Software) VGrADS develops software tools that simplify and accelerate the development of large-scale HPDC (High Performance Distributed Computing) applications and services while delivering high levels of performance and resource efficiency. Specifically, I and Dr. Chien have proposed a new HPDC paradigm called Virtual Grid (VG) which enables application-driven resource programming, distributed resource virtualization, and resource provisioning for large-scale distributed shared resources. Virtual Grid enables the users to program their resource environments on demand using a resource description language named VGDL while a runtime framework called VGES encapsulates the complexity of distributed resource management from the users, provisioning the resources that satisfy the temporal and spatial requirements of applications. ParADE (Parallel Application Development Environment) ParADE enables an easy and high performance programming for a variety of system architectures ranging from multi-cores to SMP clusters. ParADE uses a standard SAS (Shared Address Space) programming model, OpenMP, while the executables are compiled according to the target system architectures. Especially, ParADE converts an OpenMP program for SMP clusters into a hybrid program consisting of MPI and VSM (Virtual Shared Memory) APIs through an OpenMP translator. I designed and developed ParADE in house which consists of an OpenMP translator, a thread-safe VSM system, and a thread-safe MPI library on a high performance system area network, VIA (Virtual Interface Architecture). xBSP (eXpress Bulk Synchronous Parallel) xBSP is a parallel programming library for the BSP (Bulk Synchronous Parallel) computing model. xBSP enables the algorithm developers to design parallel algorithms and to verify them experimentally. I designed and developed the software architecture and the standard APIs of the BSP programming library on a high performance system area network, VIA (Virtual Interface Architecture). WCmail WCmail is a high-throughput e-mail server for Linux clusters. The specific target of WCmail was to scale the processing of massive incoming mails. I wrote the grant proposal, designed the system, and managed the project. XEDICS XEDICS is an XML-based EDI (Electronic Document Interchange) system. This was the first XML-based EDI system for interoperability and compatibility in Korea. I proposed and managed the project.

IC Card The goal of this project was to develop next generation IC cards for multipurposes. It included testing various IC cards and developing chip operating systems and core applications. I developed a chip operating system compatible to the ISO-7816 standard. RAS RAS is a dynamic load balancing algorithm for multi-computer systems. RAS provides adaptive fault-tolerant load-balancing for data-parallel applications. I designed and implemented the algorithm called RAS and intensively used the IBM SP2 machine at Seoul National University. Selma Selma is a natural language-based digital library system. Selma was a working prototype system that could understand Korean natural language to query relational database. The system consists of user interface, Korean language parser, semantic analyzer, and SQL synthesizer based on ODBC. I designed and implemented a semantic analyzer for Korean natural language processing.
